Music vs. Lyrics

Do you listen to the lyrics of a song, or do you listen to the beat/instruments/other aspects? Do you have a song that you love, but the lyrics are bad? One of my favorite songs of all time is Say Goodbye by Dave Matthews Band, but it is about how this guy is cheating with another guy's girlfriend. Its all about making love to a girl for one night and then she has to go back to her man the next day and they have to be just friends. The live versions are even better than the studio, but the lyrics are even worse. But I still love the song and it remains on my top 5 greatest songs of all time.
Can you disassociate the lyrics from a really good song? What songs do you love that have bad lyrics?

I would say have to go with Wilde on this one and say that art isn't necessarily good or evil, it is amoral. It just is.
That being said, I think that art can influence you, be it good or bad. I personally like my art to be offensive to me as it forces me to look outside my boundaries. "Turn on the Bright Lights" by Interpol has a few songs that bother me because of the ways he treats women. But I love that album and I love those songs. The album made me uncomfortable the first few times I heard it, but I've grown to love it, though I disagree with his thoughts and attitudes.

BTW, I also love Requiem Mass by Mozart. I have no idea what the lyrics are saying because they are in Latin, but I love the song. I'm wondering if it would make a difference if the lyrics were bad, but non-understandable?

I have to say that I like
to listen to the music
rather than the lyrics since I really like rock
music which mostly has non-redemptive lyrics. Lyrics that I feel guilty about many times. Though I will turn it off if it has anything to do with the devil, the word devil, or I just simply am convinced is demoniacally energized.I don't even let it enter my ears. But many times I pick and choose (and in my humble opinion, i think I have good taste)
those songs that have some
thing about them that in feeling or instrumentally has excellency. So as long as the lyrics are not
demonic or lascivious I just ignore them and enjoy the talented creativity of the artists.

Must say I have a whole bunch of songs that have lyrics that are bad. Many of them by Eric Clapton.
Cocaine for one and Layla.
The thing is Layla was written to a woman who at that time was still married
to one of his best friends.
That man was George Harrison.Awesome music though.

Woah! I'm really digging the template/theme of this blog. It's simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it's difficult to get that "perfect balance" between usability and visual appeal. I must say you've done
a fantastic job with this. Also, the blog loads very quick for me on
Opera. Excellent Blog!
